Food forests: empowering communities in Western Uganda.

In Karambi District, Western Uganda, our partner Karambi Group of People with Disabilities (Karambi) are empowering the local community through food forestry. Founded in 1995, Karambi PWD supports people with disabilities to have equal access to food and education.

Through training and tree planting, we're increasing food security and building confidence in sustainable and self-sufficient agricultural ecosystems. And so far, they’ve supported the local community to plant over 32,644 trees that provide food for 138 households in the area. 686 school children and 46 teachers have also received training on permaculture techniques and alternative food systems.

One project participant, Maate, said, "I really thank the Karambi group and their partners ITF for the support and knowledge given to me and other members of my community. I now have vegetables and fruits available on my own land throughout the year, and my family no longer worries where to get their next meal."

Sustainable Community Forestry

This project, is part of our Sustainable Community Forestry programme (SCF) which supports communities on the front lines of the climate crisis to develop and implement their own solutions to restoring landscapes and tree cover whilst improving livelihoods.

Thanks to funding from Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund, ITF is working with 16 partners across 7 African countries to take effective action against the climate and biodiversity crises.
