How to plant a tree
in your garden
Planting your tree properly will allow it to grow and thrive for decades to come. You’ll want to plant it in a way that enables the tree to grow straight and for its roots to spread and give it access to water, nutrients and drainage.
Step 1. Dig a hole
Work out the size of the hole.
The size of the hole will depend on the size of the tree. A general rule is to dig a hole that is two to three times wider than the tree’s root ball and the same depth as the root ball.
Dig the hole
Use a spade to dig the hole, starting from the centre and working outwards. Remove any rocks, weeds or other debris from the hole.
Step 2. Plant your tree
Place the tree in the hole
Carefully place the tree into the hole, making sure it is straight and centred. The top of the root ball should be level with the surrounding soil.
Step 3. Backfill and firm soil
Fill in the hole with soil and compost
Stamp the soil down gently to remove any air pockets.
If you find you need more soil, you can add compost until it is level with the ground. Press the soil down with your heel to make sure it’s steady and doesn’t move.
Step 4. Water and mulch
Feed and water your tree
Once your tree is in the ground, water it thoroughly to settle the soil. Then put a thick layer of mulch around the base of the tree, taking care to leave a gap between the mulch and the trunk.
Mulching feeds the tree, helping to retain moisture and nutrients in the soil and prevents weeds from growing up and competing with your tree.
Step 5. Protect it
Protect your tree
If you have animals like rabbits in your garden, you’ll need to protect your tree.
Protective spirals and canes are available at most garden centres. If you are using a cane, push it hard into the ground before you plant the tree. Open the spiral and wrap it around the tree and cane.
Tree guards will need to be removed after four to five years once the tree is established.
If your garden backs onto fields, you may need to protect your tree from damage by deer. There are lots of tree guards and shelters on the market or you can make your own from stakes and chicken wire.
