How green do you think motorbikes are?
Not very, would probably be a lot of people’s response. All that air pollution, all that CO2.
But Samuel Muhindo, ITF’s Western Uganda Project Officer, has shown that in his job the motorbike is the cleanest, most cost-effective option. Thanks to ITF supporters we have invested in a motorbike to help him in his work, and it is already making a huge difference to our tree planting projects.
Samuel works closely with our community partners to make sure that projects run well. Successful projects leave a lasting positive impact on the environment and the communities that run them.
To do this, he needs to look at trees and tree nurseries in rural communities, some in very remote areas. For example the Alpha Women Empowerment Initiative is in Mbunga, which is about 3000m high, in very rough terrain.
He says, “The motorbike moves easily on slopes and rough roads. This means I can get to places without delays, so we can even implement projects in hard-to-reach areas. A car wouldn’t cope with the bad terrain and poor road network.”
Samuel and the team have also found the bike to be cost-effective. It’s much cheaper than hiring one, and uses a lot less fuel than a car or a truck.
Small steps like these can make a huge difference in our community-led tree planting projects. Now we can reach the most remote areas in Western Uganda and bring about positive change for people and the planet.
