Your guide to Plantober tree seeds

Here in the UK, we desperately need to plant more trees. But not just any trees. We need native species which will thrive in our climate.

Tree seeds come in all shapes and sizes. From the winged seeds of a sycamore tree to the pip of an apple. These little seeds contain everything a tree needs to germinate and grow into a new tree.

But each seed takes a different journey to germination. Some are much more complicated than others. For instance holly can need to lie dormant in the earth through two winters before it will start to grow.

For Plantober, we collect and plant nut tree seeds as these are some of the easiest seeds to grow. These include oak, beech, walnut, horse chestnut, sweet chestnut, and hazel.

Below you can see some examples of these trees and their seeds.

Tree seeds are everywhere. Once you get your eye in you’ll start to notice them all around you, on the ground under your feet and above you in the branches.

To collect your tree seeds, simply take a walk around your local area to wherever there are trees. Parks, woodland or an arboretum are all full of tree seeds. But if you look carefully, you’ll spot them under trees on residential streets or in the middle of a city.

Before pocketing your seed, give it a quick check to make sure there are no holes or visible signs of mould. You can also do the float test to determine which seeds have a better chance of germinating.
