In the UK, we work with schools, corporations and individuals to promote the importance of planting new trees, and of protecting established ones. We run schemes to help people plant trees to commemorate a special occasion and campaign to save woodlands and individual trees under threat.
Internationally, we work with non-governmental organisations in developing countries, to support sustainable projects run by and for local communities. These projects involve promoting awareness of arboriculture and the need to maintain biodiversity, protecting existing trees, and planting trees that provide food and income for local people.
Trees are vital to life on our planet. As the longest-established tree charity in the UK, we draw on 80 years’ experience in the field to provide a wealth of knowledge that has never been more valuable than in the current period of environmental change.

The world needs trees
The world’s woodlands
provide a major life support system for the planet, converting atmospheric
carbon dioxide back into oxygen. They are home to plants and animals that are
rare and endangered. Trees and forests provide life-saving medicines and new
drugs to combat disease. Ten percent of the world’s tree species are under
threat of extinction.
Across the globe 15 million hectares of forest are destroyed every year. We
campaign to reduce deforestation and fund tree planting to restore lost
woodlands. We help the world’s poorest communities to improve their conditions
and local environments and we actively promote tree planting as a way of making
the world a better place now, and for generations to come.
The UK needs trees
Since 1930 nearly half of
our ancient woodland has been lost. Native birds, butterflies, insects and
plants all depend on our woodland systems to survive. Trees provide shade, cut
down on noise and reduce airborne pollution.
We all need trees
Trees make a landscape both more beautiful and more varied as well as providing
environmental benefits and supporting other life forms.
