BLANCHMAN’S FARM

COMMUNITY WILDLIFE AREA - FULL

Information and History:

This site was a working farm until just after World War 2 and the earliest records show that it dates back to 1566.  Most of the farmland was sold off for development but this 10 hectare site was saved by local opposition.  It now belongs to Tandridge District Council and became a community wildlife area in 1991, with the aim of creating an area accessible to and maintained by the community in perpetuity, for conservation, recreation and education in the broadest sense.  Representatives of the Warlingham Residents’ Association, Tandridge District Council, local schools, Surrey Wildlife Trust and the Downlands Project form the Management Committee and a long term plan has been formulated for the site.

Since its formation, extensive woodland, hedgerow and wild flower planting has taken place, the old farm pond has been restored and an all-weather access trail has been provided.  It now provides a valuable open space for people and a natural habitat for many plants and animals.
