Parkwood Springs, Burngreave, Sheffield
Burngreave is located just north of Sheffield City Centre (centred on OS grid ref SK360895). It's a disadvantaged inner city area with higher unemployment and health problems than the average. However, it does have particularly rich cultural diversity.
Site Description:
Parkwood Springs is owned by Sheffield City Council. It is 141ha of green space physically and visually in the ‘heart of the city’ of Sheffield being less then 1.5km from the city centre.
The site is home to a ski village and artificial slopes. It boasts a rich mosaic of woodland, heathland, acid grasslands, sssi’s, allotments, cemetery, sports fields, nature reserves and wetlands. This unique naturalistic backdrop is visible from much of Sheffield and out into the Peak District, providing a visual link from the countryside into the city and vice versa.
There is an active landfill occupying part of the site that will continue its phased operations until 2018.
Directions:
Visible from much of Sheffield, Parkwood Springs is the area of open space between Herries Road and Rutland Road adjoining the dry ski slope.
The site can be accessed from two directions:
Both Penrith Rd and Scraith Wood Drive can be accessed from Herries Road.
