Warren Barn Wood - FULL

Cockington Country Park, Devon

Cockington Country Park is a 460 acre traditional English vountry estate with a manor house at its heart, a small thatched village, formal parkland, woods, ponds, pasture and a beautiful landscape setting.  Few people can believe that it is less than a mile from the busy tourist resorts or Torquay and Paignton.

The Country Park is managed by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, a registered charity that took over the management of the land from Torbay Council in 1999.  The headquarters of the Trust are at Cockington Court, which is now a busy craft centre where craftspeople display their skills.

Warren Barn Wood was created in 1994 on a former arable field of around 5 acres, which was planted with a mixture of broadleaved species.  These are now well-established and are flourishing.  Elsewhere on the estate new single parkland trees have been planted in the pastures to maintain the tradition of mature trees in the landscape, and field corner copses have been planted to give shelter and provide wildlife habitat.

The main area of mature woodland, Manscombe Plantation (planted in the early 19th century) requires regular thinning as well as some re-planting and after-care in areas affected by storm damage.

Entry to the park is free and it is open all year round.  The Dedication Book is held in the Court, which is open from March to December, 10.00am – 5.00pm 7 days a week.  Again entry is free.  Outside these dates please contact us to arrange access:
