Pitsmoor Road Open Space (Woodside), Burngreave

Burngreave is located just north of Sheffield City Centre (centred on OS grid ref SK360895).  It's a disadvantaged inner city area with higher unemployment and health problems than the average.  However, it does have particularly rich cultural diversity.

Pitsmoor Road Open Space was created on the site of former terraced housing between Pitsmoor Road and Woodside Lane. Maps from 1637 show this site to be agricultural land and this stayed the case until the 19th century. The area was originally called Birkin Fields. In the 19th century the land was divided up and turned into allotments for the use of local residents until the turn of the century when the area was cleared to make way for residential development.

The area itself has a wide range of habitats on it but is primarily made up of amenity grassland. A dense strip of mature woodland runs along the border of the open space by the railway line. The woodland strip is overgrown and contains a large amount of poplar and buddleia. The site is divided into three sections by paths that run through the area. An avenue of London Plane, Maple and Ash trees shades the central path

Directions:

By car:  From the north side of the city you will need to take the A6135 into Sheffield. The junction between the A6135 (Barnsley Road) and Pitsmoor Road is marked by what is clearly an old toll both. Take the right hand road (Pitsmoor Road) this will lead you to Pitsmoor Open Space, where the lower quadrant is the present FTS site.

From the south, head for the city centre following road signs for Barnsley/M1 this will take you to the wicker.  From here you head under the railway bridge and head up Spital Hill (A6135). Follow this road until you see St Catherine’s Catholic Church on the left hand side.  After the pelican crossing take the next left turn up Minna Road at the end of this road turn left onto Pitsmoor Road. The Open space is on the right hand side.

By Bus:  Catch the 47/48 from the bus station and ask the Driver for the first stop on Rock Street.  Go down the hill to the junction with Pitsmoor Road and turn right up the hill. Pitsmoor Open Space is on the left hand side with the FTS site being the lower portion of the hill near to the railway line.

The Record Book will be being kept at Bessemer House, the new HQ for the Burngreave New Deal Programme.  The office is on Carlisle Street opposite the industrial site (you can't miss it, it is a large red brick building on its own).   By car, from the A6135 junction on Spital Hill, go down Carlisle Street and carry on until you hit a large junction with two pubs on it.   Bessemer House is a little further up on the left hand side.   By bus, the 22, 72, 75, 76,97, 97a all go up Spital Hill.  Ask for the stop after the Carlisle Street junction and walk its not too far, 5 mins.
