Borde Hill Garden, West Sussex - FULL
Borde Hill Garden is set in 200 acres of spectacular Sussex parkland between Haywards Heath and Cuckfield. The garden has been run as a charity for the last 35 years. The garden committee has representatives from many prestigious botanical organisations, including Wisley, Kew, Bedgebury Pinetum and Edinburgh Botanic Garden. The aims of the Garden are to protect and enhance the botanical collection and there is an ongoing planting scheme for trees and shrubs.
The Garden was created at the turn of the 19th Century with plants gathered by the great plant collectors who travelled to the Himalayas, China, Burma, Tasmania and the Andes. The most important woodlands are Warren Wood, Stephanie’s Glade and Stone Pitts. Each wood comprises magnificent specimen trees - Borde Hill contains Britain’s largest number of Champion trees in a private collection. The woods are a delight in the spring with rhododendrons and bluebells, cool and peaceful in the summer months, turning fiery in the autumn.
In the formal part of the Garden botanical interest and garden design play equally important roles. Extended colour from magnificent rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas in spring to exuberant summer herbaceous borders and fragrant roses, culminating in a vivid blaze of autumnal colour.
The Garden is open to the public all year with an admission charge of £5.50 for adults and £3.50 for children. A donor will have one free admission and, depending on the donation, may be eligible for a Season Ticket. Dogs welcome on leads.
All trees will be planted between November and February.
The Dedication Book is kept in the Garden Admission Kiosk, situated at the entrance to the Garden. The book includes a plan showing the location of the Family Tree Scheme sites. For more information please telephone 01444 450326
