Black Country Urban Forest

Stevens Park, Dudley

Information & History

This 27 ha Park with many fine views both into the surrounding countryside and back into the Black Country is situated about half a mile from the Pedmore House Hotel, near Halesowen.

The Park is formed around Wollescote Hall, which is a Grade 2 listed building.  It was given to the people of Lye and Wollescote by Ernest Stevens in 1930 with the expressed intention that the Hall be used for the benefit of the community, with the proviso that the drinking of alcohol and the discussion of politics be prohibited.  Covenants on the trust also prohibit the playing of ball games on a Sunday.

In 1971 Wollescote Hall was rented out to Worcestershire Education Department as an annexe to Folley College Art Department.  When the College ceased to use the building it fell into disrepair. This trend was reversed in 1991 when renovation work commenced and the Hall is now fully restored and used by the Lye/Wollescote Sons of Rest and part of the Social Services Department of Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council.

In passing it should be noted that there have been people living on this site since around 1282 when two families lived in what was then the hamlet of Wlfrecote

The Family Tree Scheme Record Book will be located at the offices of the National Urban Forestry Unit, The Development Centre, The Science Park, Stafford Road, Wolverhamton.
